Video Experiment #1
Behind the Green Door
2024-06-18
I have been fiddling around a bit with video since the end of last year with the thought of maybe adding that to the content collection. The trouble is I know nothing about video editing, and I have not had the time to learn, so the few efforts at doing video were straight to Telegram or straight to the trash bin. Video editing is a completely different set of skills from audio editing and much more frustrating. The main challenge is figuring out how to make short videos that can be posted on SubscribeStar because they have a low limit on video size. That means trial and error to get the time and quality right. The original file for this video was a gig, which is about three times too big for what is allowed here. Let me know how it looks. I had to reduce the quality quite a bit, but it still looked okay on my desktop, but we shall see how it looks here. I am torn on the video stuff. The cool kids do videos, but most of the videos I see look like hostage tapes, but maybe my tastes are not aligned with the world. The ones I like are the ones where the guy walks around talking and maybe showing some things he sees on his walk or even doing the selfie stick thing. One of the Duran guys does his daily videos as he wanders around Cyprus or Athens. The other idea I have is to do short presentation videos on certain topics. Maybe five- or ten-minute presentations on the stuff that is core to this thing. They would be best for a free audience so they can be passed to the curious. That is more work than it looks as you have to put together the images and video and then time it all out with an audio tract. So far, it feels like there is more work to it than this sort of video. For now, all of this will be for the green door club. That way if it is terrible, the world does not see my terrible mistakes. On the other hand, if after some trial and error I decide to not do this, I do not have people telling me I should stop writing and focus my attention on doing videos that I do not want to do. I still get e-mails from people telling me that no one reads anymore, and I should focus on doing podcasts.

All right, I'm walking through my jungle now.
This was probably a dumb idea.
I wasn't really sure what I was doing here, but this whole area is all marshy and swampy.
You can see here when I was trying to cut it, it was just a mess.
I mean, it was like trying to cut a swamp, although it's dried out quite a bit now.
So I have this big grass field and well, it's not that big.
And I'm just going to leave it that way.
I think what I'm going to do is this is my property as well.
The utility line there is I can start planting some flowers that work well in swampy areas.
I am told that there's lots of things that like growing in swampy grounds and they
produce flowers at different times a year.
So I think that's what we can do.
As you can see here, this is where deer are sleeping.
This area here, they lay down in here probably in the evening.
They really get going like, well, I don't know, just before sunset.
You'll start to see them milling all over the place.
And if you're driving, it is quite dangerous.
Let's see if we can walk our way through here.
All right.
Anyway, now we're along the creek.
Oh, there goes a bunch of frogs.
that's a thing that i've run into with cutting grass is i kind of have to scan
around i found a little nest of baby rabbits the other day and i saw it just by
dumb luck so anyway i wound up uh avoiding running the uh the mower over them but
uh what i wind up doing is i run them i push the mower around different places
where i know the frogs are and a turtle
And they pop up, and I wait for them to get out of the way, and then I can run them over.
I'm like... What the heck was that?
Well, anyway, I'm, I guess, Mr. Nature.
I'm Earthy Crunchy Seaman now.
Anyway, what I was... It's funny.
I'm feeling pretty good about getting back from Detroit.
Not that I really had a good time with the Groypers.
I didn't have a bad time.
I met some of them.
And some of them I've met before, and I think most of them are sincere.
The funny thing about that whole scene is that it is kind of a product of the
Internet age,
and it's not really something I think anyone over the age of 30 can really relate to.
I mean,
you can if you think about it,
and that's what I've been trying to do is think about it and talk about it.
But the funny thing is,
people get mad at me when I talk about that scene,
Fuentes and the Groipers and all those guys,
It's the oddest thing.
I get people who are kind of on our side,
I guess,
or whatever our side is,
but people who think their politics line up with mine,
they get really mad at me.
Oh, you don't understand, and you're wrong, and you did this.
Or some guy on Twitter gave me the business about how, I don't know, he was just going off.
I put him on mute because I just didn't want to hear it anymore.
And I really do think a lot of it is envy.
But, of course, I get people on the other side
who don't like Fuentes and don't really like,
or I would suppose don't really like my politics,
I don't know,
they'll give me the business saying,
oh,
you're being too nice to him,
you're being too nice to those guys,
you know,
and all that stuff.
So I don't know.
My sense is that it's all mostly envy.
Let's walk around here a little bit.
that drives this stuff.
And this is a fun thing.
We're all, I suppose, prone to it.
I know that I am.
I see people who are, I don't know, not as hardworking as I am.
I'm talking about just in this content creation world.
They don't put anywhere near the effort I do into it.
They're not really doing anything that 10 other people aren't doing.
You couldn't easily find hundreds of people, thousands of people in some cases.
Yet they get, you know, all kinds of attention and
all kinds of money.
You know, money's always a big part of these things.
And,
you know,
you look and go,
jeez,
how in the world is that guy living that kind of lifestyle and making that kind of
money and getting all this attention when he's kind of an idiot?
And, you know, you can't help but think, eh, I don't know, maybe it's wrong or something.
But, you know, envy is a sin for a reason because it's unproductive.
You know,
the way in which to get better,
for you to get better,
is to concentrate on you getting better,
not
comparing yourself to someone else and saying,
you know,
I resent this person's success and I wish it was my success.
Because it's not going to happen unless you actually work harder and find some way to,
you know,
whatever it is you're doing.
And we all fall into that.
I catch myself sometimes doing this.
You know, there's certain people...
that I won't name them,
I think,
gosh,
you know,
this guy,
he's just kind of,
he's just really repackaging other people's ideas,
including my ideas sometimes,
and he's getting,
you know,
he's monetizing it,
he's getting attention,
or,
you know,
Bigfoot people are talking about him,
and I'll catch myself thinking,
God,
what a jerk,
but I think,
you know what,
he's not a jerk,
he's just
He's doing what he thinks he should be doing.
He may not even be aware of the fact that he's borrowing from other people.
He's just doing what he thinks is the right thing to do, and it's working, so he keeps doing it.
And the way in which to avoid the trap of envy is to be self-aware of it,
to recognize that we're all prone to it.
But I think that's what drives a lot of this stuff with these guys.
I think the critics of Fuentes and the critics of his critics...
It's an envy game.
Maybe that's just the nature of all politics.
I don't know.
I've read a lot about radical politics over the years,
and one of the funny things about radical politics is that all the people involved
were kind of petty jerks.
Their squabbles were often just personal.
They had nothing to do with
politics at all they had everything to do with just personal beats you know Lennon
was kind of famous for this stuff so maybe that's just the way it is I don't know
well anyway I'm not really sure what I had to say at all the one thing that I uh
let's see how much time I got on my clock here I don't know how long I can do
videos I think I can do maybe 10 minutes and load them up to subscribe sorry I
don't know this is an experiment so
It's possible that no one will see this video.
But, I don't know.
We'll see what happens.
But anyway, what I'm... What was I saying?
Oh, okay.
I kind of lost my train of thought there.
is one of the things, it's good to get out to events.
Even, like, you know, I didn't go to much of the sort of ad hoc parties.
I was with some people, and we're just happy to hang out with each other.
Some people I knew for a while, and some people I've just met who I didn't know anything about.
In fact, one of them was a young guy who was kind of involved in sort of the geopolitics stuff.
He's really into, he hangs out with Jackson Hinkle.
He's not buddies with him, but they've associated with each other.
Jackson Hinkle, or Hankle?
I don't know.
I got the name pretty close.
But he's the guy who was interviewed by Tucker at one point.
I think he either he lives in Russia or he was in Russia.
He interviewed Putin, I think.
So anyway, but the fun part was is just getting away from things.
You know, since I moved in the end of March.
So you figure that's April and May and now.
Well, yeah, April and May.
Just been kind of in a rut.
You know, just kind of... I don't know.
I had so much work.
I was so busy for so long.
And then it kind of... I came to a break.
And I took a break.
But then I started getting frustrated by the fact that I wasn't getting any of the other projects done.
I've got tons of stuff to do.
I mean,
this little area here really does need some kind of cleaning up to just keep it...
You know,
keep too much of the brush,
like this tree here.
You know, some of this would be cleaned up.
But anyway...
You've got a million projects.
But just getting away and getting around normal people and our kind of people, it was a good refresher.
And it's a good reminder.
That's why I tell everyone, go to events.
Even if you're not sure,
even if you're by yourself,
you'll find that there's going to be a lot of people there who are loners,
singles.
who uh go there and and you'll have a good time and it'll be wonderful i've gone to
a lot of events all over the world i've gone over this event and it's it's worked
out pretty well so anyway i'm feeling pretty pretty chipper about things i gotta
figure out how i'm gonna make these videos i'm not sure if i should be wandering
around i don't know that was a great experiment let's see how much time i got in on
this thing almost nine minutes so let's see if we can make it an even 10.
what else do i need to talk about uh yeah um
Oh, wait a second.
I thought I heard a deer.
Anyway.
Yeah, I guess I got one other thing.
And that is, I'm not entirely sure if I want to keep both Substack and Subscribestar.
I've been doing both.
I have some degree of loyalty to the Subscribestar people.
But I see people kind of moving slowly out of Subscribestar into Substack.
So, you know, if there's some sort of preference that people have.
Or if it's, you know, people think that, hey, you know, it'd be just great to be in one platform.
Let me know.
I mean, I don't really have a problem with supporting both of them.
It works fine.
There's really no much more effort than just doing one.
But I was kind of curious because I've been noticing that I bet you about 100
people have moved from Subscribestar over to Substack.
And so maybe that's just people would like to be on one platform.
So if anyone has any thoughts or ideas on it.
Well, anyway, here's my first pay-per-view experimental video.
We'll see how this goes.
Let me know in the comments how you like and subscribe.
Anyway, let me know in the comments what you think about this.
And if not, you keep doing it.
That's the other thing.
If people like this, then I'll work on it and try to make it better.
Talk to you soon.
